Essential Tips for Your First Pilates Teaching Experience

Your first class as a new Pilates instructor can feel daunting, but with the right preparation, you'll deliver a session you can be proud of. Here are our top tips for success.

1. Know Your Sequence Inside Out

Practice your planned sequence until it becomes second nature. This allows you to focus on your clients rather than remembering what comes next. Film yourself teaching and review it to identify areas for improvement.

2. Arrive Early

Get to your venue at least 15 minutes before class. Set up equipment, test any music or audio, and take a few moments to centre yourself. This calm preparation time makes a huge difference.

3. Greet Every Client

Make eye contact and introduce yourself to each person who enters. Ask if anyone has injuries or is new to Pilates. This personal touch immediately builds rapport and trust.

4. Start with Confidence

Begin with a warm, welcoming introduction. Explain what to expect from the class and invite questions. Your confidence (even if you have to fake it a little) will put clients at ease.

5. Mirror Your Movements

Remember to mirror when demonstrating – your right is their left. This takes practice but becomes automatic with time.

6. Use Clear Cueing

Speak clearly and use consistent language. Preview upcoming movements ("Next, we'll transition to..."

) and use imagery to help clients understand positioning.

7. Circulate and Adjust

Don't stay rooted to one spot. Move around the room, offer individual corrections, and provide hands-on adjustments when appropriate (always asking permission first).

8. End with Grace

Finish on time with a proper cool-down. Thank your clients, invite feedback, and remind them of your next class. A strong ending leaves a lasting impression.

Remember

Every experienced instructor was once a beginner. Each class you teach builds your confidence and skills. Trust your training, be present with your clients, and enjoy the journey!
